Vijay Eswaran; Taming the Ego and Opening Your Mind: A Personal Journey

This is Vijay Eswaran story about how he found himself in the grips of ego-mania and what he did to recover. Vijay Eswaran is a Malaysian entrepreneur, philanthropist, author, educator and motivational speaker. He founded The Alliance Group of Companies – one of the largest privately owned conglomerates in Malaysia with over 20 companies under its umbrella. Vijay Eswaran story offers insights on how we can all benefit from opening our minds to new ideas and empowering ourselves through education.

As the eldest child of my parents, I was expected to excel in whatever I did. I worked hard at school. My sister and brother were more of free spirits; they did not work too hard but their results were better than mine – which left me feeling insecure and inadequate.

My father always used to say, “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” So I worked even harder. At university, I started a business on the side and it did well. This gave me a sense of accomplishment and reinforced my belief that if I worked hard enough, I could achieve anything.

I was on top of the world. My ego was soaring. I thought I was invincible, but little did I realise that ego has many disguises and is not easily exposed. We all have an ego to some extent; it keeps us motivated, energised and competitive. But the problem starts when you allow your ego to take over – when your mind becomes so consumed by how wonderful you are that you start to believe the hype.

My success was exacerbated by the fact that I became a stock market trader at a time when Malaysia’s economy was growing rapidly – it felt like everyone wanted to be an entrepreneur and everyone wanted to make money; it seemed easy, too. Stock trading is essentially gambling, but because of all the money coming into the market, it appeared like a legitimate business and I did well.
